The stated 3 mm, 4 mm or 6 mm value normally refers to the full composite panel.
ACP Sheet Thickness Guide: 3 mm, 4 mm and 6 mm
ACP sheet thickness generally means the total nominal thickness of the aluminium composite panel, including both aluminium skins and the central core. It should not be confused with aluminium skin thickness, core thickness or coating thickness. A thicker panel is not automatically the right panel for every project, because installed performance also depends on panel size, skin specification, core, coating, support framing, fixing, joint design, wind action, fire requirements and workmanship.
This guide compares commonly discussed 3 mm, 4 mm and 6 mm ACP panels and explains how to choose responsibly for interiors, signage, façades, ceilings, partitions and decorative applications. What to understand before selecting ACP thickness
Aluminium skin, core, coating, panel dimensions and intended use can still differ.
Panel size, wind load, support spacing, fixing, joints, fire requirements and building height matter.
Price and suitability should be assessed on a like-for-like product and installation basis.
What does ACP sheet thickness mean?
ACP sheet thickness normally describes the total depth of the finished composite panel. That total includes the two aluminium face layers and the central core, but it should not include the removable protective film used during transport and fabrication. The terms below are different specifications and should never be treated as interchangeable:
Typical ACP sheet layers
- Total panel thickness
- The nominal overall depth of the aluminium composite panel, commonly stated in millimetres.
- Aluminium skin thickness
- The thickness of each aluminium face layer. Two panels with the same total thickness can have different skin specifications.
- Core thickness
- The central composite layer between the aluminium skins. It contributes most of the overall panel depth.
- Coating thickness
- The protective and decorative coating on the aluminium surface. It is a separate paint-system specification.
How is ACP thickness measured?
- Identify a clean, undamaged edge of the panel.
- Use an appropriate thickness-measuring instrument without compressing or damaging the edge.
- Exclude the removable protective film from the product specification.
- Compare the observation with the technical data sheet or approved product document.
- For project acceptance, follow the agreed inspection method and approved specification.
Why nominal thickness should be documented
A site measurement is useful for checking, but it does not replace a verified technical data sheet. Buyers should request documentation that clearly states the nominal panel thickness, aluminium skin, core, coating, dimensions and intended application. Do not assume an unverified measurement describes the complete product specification.
Common ACP sheet thicknesses: 3 mm, 4 mm and 6 mm
Our Aluminium Composite Panel portfolio includes 3 mm, 4 mm and 6 mm panel categories, and the same nominal thickness can be offered with different aluminium-skin, alloy, core and coating specifications. The descriptions below are application-led starting points, not universal specifications. Final selection should be confirmed against project drawings, product documents and the complete installation system.
3 mm ACP
Commonly considered for: interior walls, signage, fascia, partitions, ceilings, columns, display systems and selected low-rise accents.
Check before selection: panel size, impact exposure, support frame, finish, core, routing, folded returns and outdoor exposure.
Evaluate another specification when: large exposed modules, higher wind action or consultant requirements call for a different panel system.
4 mm ACP
Commonly considered for: commercial elevations, exterior cladding zones, shopfronts, fascia, column cladding, canopies, signage and interiors.
Check before selection: aluminium skin, core, coating, panel module, wind load, support spacing, fixing, joint design and fire requirements.
Evaluate another specification when: a lightweight interior panel may be sufficient, or larger modules and project engineering require another panel category.
6 mm ACP
Commonly considered for: selected projects evaluating a thicker panel category for panel geometry, handling, fabrication or rigidity requirements. 6 mm is not automatic upgrade over 4 mm.
Check before selection: panel weight, lifting, routing and folding, support spacing, sub-frame, fixings, joints, wind action and approved shop drawings.
Evaluate another specification when: 3 mm or 4 mm can meet the complete application more efficiently.
3 mm, 4 mm and 6 mm ACP sheet comparison
Use this table as a decision aid, not as a substitute for project engineering. We recommend evaluating each option together with aluminium skin and alloy, core, coating, panel size, framing, fixing, wind action, fire requirements and installation details.
| Overall thickness | Common application categories | Key selection considerations | When another specification should be evaluated | Questions to ask before purchase |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 mm ACP | Interiors, signage, fascia, ceilings, partitions, displays, column wraps and selected low-rise accents. | Panel dimensions, support frame, impact exposure, routing, folded returns, finish, core and environmental exposure. | When large exposed panels, higher wind action, wider support spacing or project specifications require another system. | What aluminium skin, core, coating, sheet size, support and mounting method are included? |
| 4 mm ACP | Commercial elevations, exterior cladding zones, shopfronts, fascia, columns, canopies, corporate identity and interiors. | Panel module, building height, wind pressure and suction, support spacing, core, coating, fixing, joint and fire requirements. | When a lightweight interior panel is sufficient, or when larger modules and engineering review call for another category. | Is the complete façade or installation system approved for the intended application? |
| 6 mm ACP | Selected large-format, geometry-led or specification-driven applications where a thicker panel category is being evaluated. | Weight, handling, lifting, fabrication, routing depth, folded details, panel module, sub-frame compatibility and replacement access. | When 3 mm or 4 mm can satisfy the approved application, framing and performance requirements without unnecessary complexity. | How will the panel be fabricated, supported, fixed, handled and integrated with the approved system? |
What should be checked besides ACP thickness?
Aluminium skin thickness
Two ACP sheets with the same total thickness can have different aluminium face layers and alloy grades. Skin thickness and alloy are separate specifications that can influence fabrication behaviour, surface stability, dent resistance, handling and cost. Comparing them together with the application, core and support design.
Core type
Core type can influence weight, fabrication, fire behaviour, intended use, documentation requirements and price. Check the declared product grade, core type and relevant project documents rather than assuming that overall thickness indicates the core.
Coating and finish
ACP sheet thickness does not reveal whether a panel is intended for interior decoration, exterior exposure, long-term weathering or a special finish. Check the coating system, shade, finish direction and intended application separately.
How thickness affects panel behaviour and fabrication planning
- Routing and folding: routing depth, fold detail and corner preparation must follow verified product guidance and approved shop drawings.
- Handling and lifting: thicker or larger panels may change weight, team handling, lifting equipment, packaging and site movement.
- Support spacing: sub-frame spacing and profile stiffness must be designed for the panel module, wind action and fixing system.
- Joints and movement: joint width, sealant or gasket strategy, thermal movement and tolerances should be coordinated.
- Fixing method: tray, rout-and-return, direct fixing or another approved method changes fabrication and installation requirements.
- Access and replacement: sequence, maintenance access and future panel replacement should be considered before detailing.
Façade-system design is interdependent
In our technical evaluations, we treat wind load, panel stress and deflection, panel size, stiffeners and back-support design as connected decisions. Fabrication details should therefore follow the applicable product specification, project-approved calculations and shop drawings rather than a generic thickness rule.
How to evaluate ACP thickness by application
The right thickness is application-specific. Starting with how and where the panel will be used, then reviewing panel size, exposure, support, fabrication, aluminium skin and alloy, core, coating, fire requirements and approval responsibility.
Interior walls, columns and retail spaces
- Confirm whether the area is public-facing or impact-prone.
- Coordinate joints, edges, corners and access panels.
- Check substrate condition and support spacing.
- Select the coating and finish for interior use.
Signage and corporate identity panels
- Review sign dimensions and wind exposure.
- Check routed lettering, cut-outs and folded returns.
- Confirm the support frame and mounting points.
- Coordinate shade consistency across multiple locations.
Exterior façades and commercial elevations
- Review wind load, pressure and suction.
- Confirm panel module, support spacing and sub-frame.
- Check building height, geometry and edge zones.
- Verify core, coating, fire requirements and consultant approval.
Ceilings, partitions and decorative features
- Confirm weight and suspension or support capacity.
- Check fold geometry and visible edge treatment.
- Plan lighting, services and maintenance access.
- Coordinate fire and interior-finish requirements.
Is thicker ACP always better?
Thickness is a category, not a complete specification
How does ACP thickness affect price?
Panel supply before fabrication, freight, accessories or installation.

How to choose ACP sheet thickness responsibly
Use this sequence to prepare the brief before asking a supplier or consultant to recommend a panel. It helps prevent thickness from being selected before the application and system are understood.
- Define the intended application.
State whether the panel is for façade, signage, interior, ceiling, partition, column, canopy or another use. - Confirm interior or exterior exposure.
Identify sunlight, rain, humidity, pollution, coastal exposure and cleaning conditions. - Identify panel size and module.
Record the proposed panel dimensions, aspect ratio, folds, returns and joint pattern. - Review building height and wind exposure.
Façade and outdoor signs require project-specific pressure and suction review. - Confirm support framing and fixing.
Define sub-frame profiles, spacing, attachment and approved installation method. - Check aluminium skin specification.
Do not compare panels only by total thickness.
Common ACP thickness selection mistakes - and how to correct them
Choosing only by total thickness
Corrective action: compare aluminium skin, core, coating, sheet size, support and intended use.
Assuming thicker always means better
Corrective action: select the panel that satisfies the approved system without unnecessary weight or complexity.
Ignoring aluminium skin thickness
Corrective action: request the skin specification in the technical data sheet and quotation.
Comparing prices without sheet dimensions
Corrective action: compare the same sheet size, usable area and unit of measurement.
Ignoring the core type
Corrective action: verify product identification, application and relevant fire-performance documents.
Using an interior finish outdoors
